We decided we'd like to buy an older show car despite there being so many lovely ones to choose we finally decided on a '59 Caddy - but it had to be PINK (Pat's decision!)
I went on the web and looked at eBay and Hemmings - still not many pinks and the uncertainty of buying from a distance or doing the trip to the States. I finally found it in the Hemmings listings - just a short sentence from a collector who seemed to be selling-off his Caddy's (2x'58's and my '59). He was in New York State and I started asking loads of questions about the car which I'd picked-up from ads and talking to an owner at Billing (thanks Mike) and then the owner said "What you need is an Appraiser," Of course - that's the word I was looking for if I couldn't inspect it myself. There were lots of them listed in Hemmings and I located one in New York (Frank Nicodemus) who agreed to inspect the Caddy and give a full report with loads of pictures.
We couldn't wait for the report to arrive, in case we missed out, and phoned him to discover that he thought the car was virtually A1 and well worth the money. A deal was clinched.
The paperwork was sorted and the car was shipped to Southampton docks. I was going to drive it from Southampton to Scotland (600 miles) but began to think about all the things that might fail, especially if it had only been used for shows, so I got a very reasonable quote from Aberdeen Trailers to take it up to Bonnie Scotland - and that's what I did.
We collected it from their yard where all the staff had been able to admire it and drove it through Aberdeen for a bit of a cruise on the way home. The expressions on the faces of people young and old were a picture to behold. In fact, we're wondering about a Government grant for making people happy 'cos the response of so many people is just a great big grin when they see 'Lady Penelope' coming by !
We've had a great time at the Scottish shows and look forward to next season when we hope to show her down South as well as in Scotland.
